Many studies based on bioenergetics growth models have investigated the effects of environmental factors on oyster (Crassostrea gigas) growth and physiology. However, most of these models are site-specific and cannot be applied to other culture sites without the re-estimation of parameters or re-formulation of some processes. We aimed to develop a generic growth model suitable for application in contrasting environments, with a constant set of parameters. We tested the oyster-DEB model (Bourlès et al. 2009) for the stimulation of C. gigas growth in different cohorts (spats and adults) at major shellfish culture sites in France, in several years: Arcachon (1993–1994); Marennes-Oléron (2007); Quiberon (1999, 2000, 2001); Rade de Brest (2008); Baie du... |

The Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) model (Kooijman, S.A.L.M., 1986. Energy budgets can explain body size relations. J. Theor. Biol. 121, 269¿282; Kooijman, S.A.L.M., 2000. Dynamic Energy and Mass Budgets in Biological Systems. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 424 pp.) has been adapted to describe the dynamics of growth and reproduction of the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in different areas under conditions ranging from controlled to natural. The values of the model parameters were estimated from available physiological data and from published information. The sets of data used to validate the model came from three long-term growth experiments (> 5 months) performed on Pacific oysters reared under different conditions of food and... |

Oyster diseases have major consequences on fisheries and aquaculture. In France, young Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas are severely hit by the ostreid herpesvirus, whereas adults suffer mortalities presumably caused by pathogenic bacteria. Here we investigated the origin and spread of mortalities that affect both young and adult oysters, and we identified and compared their risk factors. Mortality was monitored in 2 age classes of oysters deployed in early spring at 39 sites spread over a 37 km2 surface area inside and outside of shellfish farms. Environmental data obtained from numerical modelling were used to investigate risk factors. Mortality of young oysters associated with ostreid herpesvirus occurred in the oyster farming area. Hydrodynamic... |

In Thau Iagoon (Mediterranean Sea), shellfish are cultured in suspension. Molluscs are reared on ropes that are suspended on frames. Principal species concerned by breeding are Crassostrea gigas, Mytilus galloprovincialis and, in a less extent, Ostrea edulis. A new sampling method was developped to assess the total stock of cultured shellfish and was tested in July 1998 and April 1999. The total stock was found to be 19500 tons (± 1120 SE) in 1998 and 14100 tons (± 830 SE) in 1999, thus exhibiting temporal variations. Temporal differences in the total stock are mainly attributable to the breeding cycle but also to sorne exceptionnal events which occurred in Thau lageon in 1997 and 1998 (water anoxia, bacteriological crisis, bloom of toxic algae). In the... |

The aim of this work is to study reproductive effort of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera. In order to reach this objective, two experiences were planned. First, we decidcd to follow in situ growth and reproduction of pearl oysters of three age groups : l, 2 and 3 years old. This projcct began at the end of march 1997 and is planned for one year. The results presented in this study stopped at the end of july 1997. This experience is based on the bimonthly sampling of 120 pearl oysters (40 from every age group) from the lagoon of Takapoto (Tuamotu, French Polynesia). ln a second part, an experience was lead in laboratory, on the same animals. The objective was to trigger artificially spawns and to harvest genital products to estimate values of... |

Since 1989, the standing stock of bivalves cultivated in Normandy was estimated every 5 years by Ifremer. Within the frame of the OGIVE project, a new study was conducted in 2006 to evaluate the mussel standing stock. Classical sampling methods (stratified, two-stage and simple random sampling) were used and adapted to each culture area. The total standing stock in Normandy was evaluated to 23 550 tons with a precision of 10.94 %. The west coast of Cotentin remained the main production area in Normandy with approximately 22 000 tons of mussels, whereas the east coast and the baie des Veys only represented a small part of the total stock (respectively 6% and 1%). The collected data were also used to map the spatial distribution of mussel biomasses. This map... |

The gametogenic cycle and the reproductive effort of the blacklip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, cultivated in Takapoto lagoon were studied for a 1-year period (March 1997-April 1998) by bimonthly observations of gonadal sections, dry tissue weights and gonadal index in a population of pearl oyster composed of three age-groups. pearl oysters attained sexual maturity in the end of their first year (height approximate to 40 mm), implying that P. margaritifera is a late-maturing species in comparison with other Pteriidae. This species was also confirmed to be a marked protandrous successive hermaphrodite in culture, with 100 % of males at first maturity and 75 % in older pearl oyster (height > 120 mm). The general pattern of gametogenic activity,... |

Growth of the black-lip pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera var. cumingi, was studied for an annual cycle, from March 1997 to April 1998, in the lagoon of Takapoto atoll (Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia). Growth in shell and in tissue were measured every 15 days on three successive age groups of cultivated pearl oysters. At the same time, hydrobiological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen concentration, suspended particulate matter), known to have influence on bivalve growth, were followed each week during culture. No seasonal trend was observed in hydrobiological parameters, except for temperature which varied between 26 degrees C and 31 degrees C. The potential food for pearl oysters (particulate organic matter, POM, mg l(-1)) was slightly... |

Mussel aquaculture is well developed in various ecosystems of temperate waters. In the aim of developing predictive tools for management of mussel aquaculture, a better understanding of relationships between the environmental conditions and mussel growth is necessary. For this purpose, development of bioenergetic models, linking environmental variables (especially food resource and temperature) and mussel growth and reproduction, are of a particular interest. Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory offers a general framework to study energy flows in organisms, from assimilation to use for maintenance, growth and reproduction. This theory is appropriate for growth modelling of marine organisms and have first been applied in 1993 to model mussel growth.... |

Oyster farming is the main aquaculture activity in France, where Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) is spatially cultured from the English Channel to the Mediterranean coasts. Oyster growth performance monitored along French coasts are widely heterogeneous among culture sites and over years. Many studies have been carried out to understand the effects of environmental factors on oyster growth and physiology, by using bioenergetics growth models. However, most of these studies were site-specific. As an example, the model developed by Barillé et al. (1997), which was extensively specified with more than 50 parameters, was validated in the Marennes-Oléron Bay, but cannot be successfully applied to other culture sites without re-estimating parameters or... |

Occupying a prime position in the French coastal landscape, oyster farming is the leading contributor to the French aquaculture sector with an estimated production of 85,000 tonnes in recent years. However, since 2008, this species has been affected by recurrent massive mortality episodes triggered by the presence of viral infectious agents (of the type Herpes virus OsHV-1 μVar) in conjunction with environmental factors (i.e. temperature rise). This viral infection induces an alteration of the antimicrobial defenses and a destabilization of its microbiota. This process leads to secondary infection by opportunistic bacteria that are potentially pathogenic and multiply rapidly, causing irreversible tissue damage leading to the death of the animal. At the... |
